‌What is carbon electrode paste?

Pasta de electrodos, also known as self-baking electrode, is a conductive material used in electric furnace equipment such as ferroalloy furnaces and calcium carbide furnaces.
It includes various shapes: cylindrical, pebble, block, etc. It can be made into different sizes using different molds according to customer needs.

Block electrode paste: 60x80x100 mm

Pebble electrode paste: 50x100mm

Column electrode paste: Ø500, Ø600, Ø700, Ø800, Ø900, Ø1000

Carbon electrode paste

Application:

Carbon electrode paste is mainly used in the production of pig iron, ferroalloys, silicon, yellow phosphorus and calcium carbide, etc. The electrodes are continuously self-baked in an electric furnace, relying on the heat in the ore furnace to complete the baking. Therefore, matching the electrode consumption rate with the roasting rate is the key to the use of electrode paste.

Due to the development of ore-fired furnace technology, it has gradually developed towards large-scale and closed directions. During the roasting process, the electrode has obtained less conductive heat and radiant heat from the open furnace type in the past, and only conductive heat is obtained.

Therefore, the amount of heat obtained by the electrode from the furnace is greatly reduced. Then it is necessary to improve the sintering performance of the electrode paste to make up for this deficiency.

Types:

‌Carbon electrode paste types mainly include standard electrode paste and closed paste. ‌

‌Standard electrode paste‌ is mainly used in open calcium carbide furnaces. Its raw materials include ordinary calcined anthracite and metallurgical coke, and medium-temperature asphalt is used as a binder. This electrode paste is characterized by high ash content, high resistivity, slow sintering speed, but low price. It is suitable for traditional open furnace types, such as open ferroalloy furnaces and small and medium-sized calcium carbide furnaces.

‌Closed paste‌ is mainly used in closed ferroalloy furnaces, calcium carbide furnaces and other metallurgical furnaces. Its raw materials include anthracite, graphite fragments and petroleum coke, and a low softening point binder is used. Compared with standard electrode paste, it has the characteristics of good electrical and thermal conductivity, low ash content, fast sintering speed and high price.

The production process of these two types of electrode paste is similar. They mainly including raw material calcination, crushing, screening, grinding, kneading and molding. As the raw material of self-baking electrode, the electrode paste is carried out in the operation of the submerged arc furnace. So the production process does not include roasting and subsequent graphitization.

Conclusión:

The production process of electrode paste is similar to the preparation process of other carbon materials, mainly including raw material calcination, crushing, screening, grinding, kneading and molding. As the raw material of self-baking electrode, the electrode paste is carried out in the operation of the submerged arc furnace. So the production process does not include roasting and subsequent graphitization. The use of this material not only plays an important role in industrial production, but also promotes the development of domestic electrode paste towards high quality.
