carbon paste electrode

Pasta de eletrodo

Electrode paste is supplied to the ferroalloy furnace. It is used as consumable conductive material and self-baking electrode in electric furnaces for producing calcium carbide and yellow phosphorus. The so-called self-baking electrode fills the metal shell with a carbon paste electrode. Under the action of the high temperature of the furnace and the heat generated when the current passes through the electrode, the carbon paste electrode is baked to make it a conductive electrode.

Electrode paste is used for the production of calcium carbide and ferroalloy,it is a consumable conductive material. As the raw material of self-baking electrodes, and its roasting is completed in calcium carbide and ferroalloy-submerged arc furnaces.

Therefore, the roasting speed and time of the electrode paste are variable, depending on the furnace type and smelting variety of the submerged heat electric furnace.

Self-baking electrodes made of electrode paste allow low working current density, generally 8-6A/m2. It has low requirements for raw materials, a simple manufacturing process, and low production costs. At the same time, it has high adhesiveness and conductivity.

Types includes closed paste, standard electrode paste, and chemical electrode paste suitable for self-baking electrodes of closed, open, and semi-closed submerged arc furnaces.

How to make it?

Generally, metallurgical coke or pitch coke can be used for the electrode paste of small calcium carbide furnaces or ferroalloy furnaces. For the electrode paste used in large electric furnaces, anthracite and metallurgical coke are used, while grafite chips are added.

This production formula is beneficial to improving the thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity of it.  It is produced by adding a binder and undergoing processes such as calcination, batching, kneading, and molding.

Electrode paste for electric furnace

Application:

When the electrode paste is put into the electrode cylinder, it moves downward with the cylinder at the same time and is continuously consumed and replenished. As the temperature rises, it will melt from a solid state to a thin paste.

After volatilizing, it transforms into a coke-like substance and undergoes the final sintering process to become an electrode. Through out this process, it bakes and the electrode’s strength continually improves, while the conductivity gradually increases.

Why call it a self-baking electrode?

After roasting at a high temperature above 1000 ℃, the paste is completely carbonized into a eletrodo de carbono. Finally, it conducts electricity and converts energy in the submerged electric furnace molten pool.

Since the electrode cylinder undergoes welding without any power failure, it also ensures the continuous consumption of the electrode and the constant roasting of the electrode paste to form an electrode.

This process gives rise to a unique type of electrode known as a self-baking electrode or continuous automatic roasting electrode. In current production practice, its diameter can be increased to 2m. This creates favorable conditions for the application of submerged arc furnaces with large load capacities. Finally, it’s cheap and easy to operate.
