What are the types of carbon and graphite products?

There are many types of carbon and graphite products used in the metallurgical industry, which can be roughly divided into three categories.

Graphite products.

Also known as graphitized products or artificial graphite products, they include ordinary power graphite electrodes, high power graphite electrodes, ultra-high power 흑연 전극, graphite blocks, and high-purity graphite used to process graphite crucibles, graphite boats, graphite molds and other products.

These products are made of petroleum coke and asphalt coke as the main raw materials, coal tar as a binder, and amorphous carbon is converted into graphite through mixing, pressing, roasting, graphitization and other processing procedures.

Their common characteristics are: carbon content is above 99%, ash content generally does not exceed 0.5%, good conductivity and good heat resistance. The temperature at the beginning of oxidation is relatively high, the thermal conductivity is also relatively large, and the corrosion resistance is strong. However, the production cycle from the preparation of raw materials to the finished product usually takes about three months, and the production cycle of some high-strength and high-density graphitized products is even longer.

Carbon products.

They refer to the blanks after forming, which can be used as long as they are roasted at about 1300 degrees Celsius. They include electric furnace carbon blocks, blast furnace carbon blocks, carbon electrodes, carbon anodes, etc. This type of product uses anthracite and metallurgical coke as raw materials. Natural graphite electrodes and regenerated graphite electrodes are electrodes produced from natural graphite or artificial graphite fragments, which can be used only after roasting.

Carbon paste products.

This type of product mixes the raw materials (crushed anthracite or coke particles) and the binder evenly under heating, without pressing and processing. Instead, the paste of the heated mixture can be used by simply casting it into a block or putting it into a container under normal pressure. Electrode paste, sealed paste, coarse seam paste, fine seam paste, etc.

Paste products are divided into two categories according to their use: one is used as a continuous self-baking electrode, such as the electrode paste conductive material used in the production of ferroalloys, calcium carbide, and yellow phosphorus. The other type of carbon paste is used as a bonding and caulking material when building carbon blocks, such as the bottom paste used for building aluminum electrolytic cell carbon blocks. The manufacturing process of paste products is relatively simple, the production cycle is short and the cost is relatively low.
